Sustainable External Travel

A new link road, Secmaton Avenue, has been approved by Devon County Council, the local highways authority, and by Teignbridge District Council. It is being backed by Homes England because it is seen as key to supporting new sustainable growth in the area.

The road, including a new bridge over Shutterton Brook, is designed to take existing and future traffic, including construction traffic, away from existing routes, particularly Elm Grove Road.

Future residents of the already agreed new homes to the south of Hensford Park will be able to use the new road to reach the roundabout on the A379 at the Sainsbury’s roundabout.

For the people living in Hensford Park, it will form one of a number of sustainable travel links connecting them with the town of Dawlish and facilities such as the country park, railway stations and the Exe Estuary Trail.

More than 40 trains a day run from Dawlish to Exeter stations, usually taking a little over half an hour, with sometimes less than 10 minutes between services.

A new station at Marsh Barton, which opened in July 2023, further increased options for commuters. Hensford Park would see cycle path links to Dawlish Warren railway station and town centre as well as to the Dawlish Country Park and the Exe Estuary Trail, which runs to Exeter.

Pedestrian routes would also offer easy access to the country park as well as Dawlish town centre and railway station.

As well as offering sustainable routes for new residents to facilities such as shops and other services in Dawlish and Dawlish Warren, these routes would allow existing residents of Dawlish access to the new facilities of Hensford Park, such as co-working spaces and electric vehicle hubs.
